The year is starting out strong with our new director and cast for Pride and Prejudice already rehearsing. Arya Pocock (11) interviewed Gabriella Saxon, our new director.
Last year our wonderful acting teacher, Erin Horst, parted ways with Inspire to pursue other careers. She left us with an outstanding director. Our new director, Gabriella Saxon, was a student of Mrs. Horst’s at Chico State. Ms. Saxon started off as an actress in high school but nearing her senior year, she decided to continue theater from a different angle, the director’s side of the stage.
In an interview, Director Saxon remarks about the upcoming play and set.
“I am most excited about the design aspects of the play. We have some really cool ideas that I can’t wait to see on stage.”
When asked about what character she would be in Pride and Prejudice she responded.
“I know this is pick-me-girl vibes, but I would pick Elizabeth Bennet. She’s the female lead of the play. She and I go through similar journeys which is why I would choose her though.” (Parker Bennett (12) is playing Elizabeth Bennet in Inspire’s rendition)
If you are interested in theater and looking for something to watch that will leave your mind reeling Saxon suggests her favorite play, Stop Kiss. The play is set in the 1980’s and it features two girls who are best friends. The people around them assume they are lesbians because they spend all their time together. The play shows the struggles of being outed early and trying to figure out your sexuality.
She has left advice for future actors auditioning for future plays and monologues.
“Look for monologues from musicals that came out around the same time as the play/musical you’re auditioning for. I would also encourage actors not to overthink the casting process.”
Ms. Saxon explained the different things that go into casting someone, don’t let it get to your head if you aren’t cast this year. There are a lot of physical aspects that are considered such as hair color, height, and eye color. Director Saxon was impressed with all the auditionees this year and hopes everyone continues theater. Break a leg, Pride and Prejudice cast and crew, thanks and welcome Ms. Saxon!
